simple pulmonary stress testing, nocturnal oximetry, rhinomanometry,
fiberoptic laryngoscopy, echocardiography, and 24-hour Holter
(cardiac) monitoring.
Many people complain of symptoms which may suggest an underlying
sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is a condition which is very common but
under--diagnosed. Consider these questions:
Do you snore?
Do you stop breathing at night?
Do you awaken often at night?
Are you a restless sleeper?
Do you suffer from daytime sleepiness?
Do you wake up feeling non-refreshed and drowsy?
Do you feel drowsy or fall asleep while driving?
If you have these symptoms, then you may have a sleep disorder.
During normal sleep, our airway is kept open by neck muscles.
When these muscles relax, the airway can become narrower and
even completely blocked, resulting in abnormal breathing and
oxygen deprivation. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when this
situation becomes repetitive throughout the night. An overnight
sleep study may be helpful in diagnosing this condition.
